With more than 500,000 caravans across the nation, it’s clear that the ‘holiday on wheels’ is one of Australia’s loved holiday option.
You do need to consider what to do when you are not using the van. Here are some useful tips for preparing for caravan storage.
Give you vehicle a thorough clean both outside and in.
On the outside you should give the whole caravan a good gong over so dirt build up does not remain on it as a place to retain moisture. Choose a cleaning agents designed for caravans that won’t damage the paint or the bodywork. Clean any mould or mildew that may have developed, and if you can, touch-up any missing pint from chips or scratches.
On the inside when you’re not using your caravan pack away sheets, cushions and other fabrics where mould and mildew might grow. Seal them in vacuum sealed storage bag to fully protect them. Clean out all the little nooks and crannies where dust accumulates. Leave cupboards and wardrobes open to assist with ventilation.
Check your tyres. As you already understand that it is vitally important to assess tyre quality before, during and after every major towing, caravan storage gives you the opportunity to conduct a comprehensive check-up of the tyres. Checking things like tread depth, and wear, correct pressure, and any side wall cuts or damage. It is good practice to slightly over inflate the tyres to account for any small leakage over time. At Queensland Motorhome and Caravan Storage we regularly check tyres and move the wheels to avoid flat spots developing.
As one of the leading causes of damage to caravans, the electrical components should be checked regularly. Make sure any external plugs and outlets are protected from the weather. This may mean wrapping in plastic or waterproofing tape. Make sure all cords are unplugged from power while stored. Whist you’re at it, have a full inspection and clean of all the connecting pins.
Plus it good to check that your insurance is up to date and valid for your motorhome at all times wherever it is stored.
